OBD II Interface FAQ

1. Third party interfaces
2. Wireless interfaces
3. Serial port settings

1. Does Movi® work with third party USB OBD II Interface Modules?

Yes, Movi® is engineered for use with any OBD II Interface Module that uses the ELM327 chip, and communicates via a serial port. However there may be OBD II hardware products that do not work with Movi®. Please test your OBD II interface module with our demo version of Movi® before you purchase a copy, as we cannot refund software sales.

2. Does Movi® work with third party WiFi or Bluetooth® OBD II Interface Modules?

It currently does not work with WiFi or network interfaces, but it has been tested with a limited number of Bluetooth® interfaces and worked. If the Bluetooth® interface shows up as a serial port in the software, and the interface has an ELM327 chip, it should work.

3. What should I select for Serial Port settings?

On Automatic it will just cycle through all of the serial ports on your computer until either it finds one that is connected to an OBD II interface, or it runs out of ports. Once connected to a port, Movi® will remember it and try that port first the next time it connects.
If you select a specific port it will only check that port for the interface. Since there is a timeout it can be faster to select the specific port.

4. What should the Port Speed (bps) be set at?

For the interface we currently ship it should be set to 38400. Another common speed for ODB II interfaces is 9600.

5. What is Parity and what should Parity be set to?

Parity is method for error detection in transmission. For most interfaces it should be set to "No Parity".

6. What is the "Timeout(sec)" selection in Movi®ʼs Preferences for?

The timeout is how long the software will wait before it gives up on hearing back from a serial port. Some cars always respond fast, in which case you would want to set the timeout short, so you don't waste time when you have connection issues. However, some cars respond more slowly, in which case you would want to set it longer to ensure that Movi® does not prematurely terminate communication.
