Functionality Issues:

1. How do I register Movi®?

To make Movi® fully functional you must register it by purchasing a licensed copy at our store. You will receive a confirmation email with a registration code enclosed. To activate the full version of Movi®, launch Movi® and simply go to (Movi -> Preferences). In the "Register" tab input your name in the "Registered To:" field, and enter your personalized registration code into the "Registration Code:" field. Once complete, the full features of Movi® will be unlocked.

2. I have the demo version of your Movi® software, but I donʼt have full access to the software features.

The demo version of Movi® is limited and shows only live data, and whether or not there is a trouble code stored. It does not allow you to view trouble codes or clear the engine light. You must purchase the full version of Movi® to unlock all features of Movi®. To activate the full version of the Movi® software you must enter the registration code.

3. What can I do with the Demo version of Movi®?

If you already have an interface that can connect to your Mac, you can download Movi® for FREE, and run it in demo mode to see if it works with your interface. You can view live data and see if your car has an error code set. To get the error code PID and description, or to clear the code, you must purchase the full version.

4. How do I know if my USB to serial driver is installed correctly?

You can download the most recent FT232R ftdi driver from http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm. Once installed, go to Moviʼs preferences (Movi® -> Preferences -> Serial Port Tab). If the ftdi driver is installed properly, in the "Serial Port" selection there will be a serial port with a name similar to "usbserial-A9007vqV". Select it.
Preference Example
You can also check if the serial port driver was installed correctly from the command line. Open the terminal app in the utilities folder (Macintosh HD -> Applications folder -> Utiities folder -> Terminal), and at the command prompt type "ls /dev". Among many other things there should be something very similar to "cu.usbserial -A9007vqV " and "tty.usbserial-A9007vqV". If not, the ftdi serial driver did not install correctly. Also, make sure you restarted after installing.
Example below:

imac-g5:~ user$ ls /dev bpf0 ptytf ttyr4 bpf1 ptyu0 ttyr5 bpf2 ptyu1 ttyr6 bpf3 ptyu2 ttyr7 console ptyu3 ttyr8 cu.Bluetooth-Modem ptyu4 ttyr9 cu.Bluetooth-PDA-Sync ptyu5 ttyra cu.ESD100v1-1 ptyu6 ttyrb cu.MotorolaV3r-DialupNetwo-1 ptyu7 ttyrc cu.modem ptyu8 ttyrd cu.usbserial-A9007vqV ptyu9 ttyre disk0 ptyua ttyrf disk0s1 ptyub ttys0 disk0s3 ptyuc ttys1 ptyr1 stderr ttyu9 ptyr2 stdin ttyua ptyr3 stdout ttyub ptyr4 tty ttyuc ptyr5 tty.Bluetooth-Modem ttyud ptyr6 tty.Bluetooth-PDA-Sync ttyue ptyr7 tty.ESD100v1-1 ttyuf ptyr8 tty.MotorolaV3r-DialupNetwo-1 ttyv0 ptyr9 tty.modem ttyv1 ptyra tty.usbserial-A9007vqV ttyv2

5. What does it mean when Movi® shows “Scan Tool Not Found?”

This can mean a few things.
1. The serial to USB driver is not installed correctly.
2. The wrong port is selected in Movi's preferences.
3. The third party interface does not have an ELM327 chip.
4. The interface is not powered.
Make sure the ignition is in the on position. On the OBD port, pin 5 is ground and pin 16 is +12 V (or greater). Your car should be supplying this. When Movi® connects to an interface, an ELM327 chip will display at the bottom of the window along with the OBD protocol of your car. If the serial port and ELM327 are displayed, but your OBD protocol is not present, your vehicle may not be OBD II certified, or there may be something wrong with the OBD connection, or system.

6. I can see that there is power in the Movi® software interface, however I canʼt see any Trouble Codes.

Make sure it does not say "Demo" in the title bar. If the software is reading a battery voltage and showing an ELM327 chip as in this screen shot, it is most likely a communication problem. Make sure you have a good connection, as the OBD II plug can often be difficult to connect correctly. You can try increasing the timeout to make sure the software is not giving up too soon. Also make sure your car is OBD II certified. There should be a small emmision control label under the hood of your car that says something similar to "OBD II Certified". Lastly, in some rare cases the interface can partially communicate with the wrong port speed set. Try a few different port speeds to check if this is the case.

7. Movi® cannot read VIN.

The request for the VIN is rarely supported by any manufacturer through the OBD II system.

Movi® Preferences:

8. What should I select for Serial Port settings?

On Automatic it will just cycle through all of the serial ports on your computer until either it finds one that is connected to an OBD II interface, or it runs out of ports. Once connected to a port, Movi® will remember it and try that port first the next time it connects.
If you select a specific port it will only check that port for the interface. Since there is a timeout it can be faster to select the specific port.

9. What should the Port Speed (bps) be set at?

For the interface we currently ship it should be set to 38400. Another common speed for ODB II interfaces is 9600.

10. What is Parity and what should Parity be set to?

Parity is method for error detection in transmission. For most interfaces it should be set to "No Parity".

11. What is the "Timeout(sec)" selection in Movi®ʼs Preferences for?

The timeout is how long the software will wait before it gives up on hearing back from a serial port. Some cars always respond fast, in which case you would want to set the timeout short, so you don't waste time when you have connection issues. However, some cars respond more slowly, in which case you would want to set it longer to ensure that Movi® does not prematurely terminate communication.
