Third Party Interfaces:

1. Does Movi® work with third party USB OBD II interface modules?

Yes, Movi® and Movi Pro® are engineered for use with any OBD II interface module that uses the ELM327 chip. However, there may be OBD II hardware products that do not work with the software. Please test your OBD II interface module with our demo version before you purchase a copy, as we cannot refund software sales.

2. Does Movi® work with third party Wi-Fi or Bluetooth OBD II interface modules?

Yes, it will work with most Wi-Fi and Bluetooth interfaces as long as they use the ELM327 chip. For Bluetooth interfaces, check that it shows up as a serial port on your computer.

Bluetooth Setup Instructions:

Bluetooth Interface Type1. Locate OBD II connector.

Plug your Bluetooth hardware interface into port ensuring a solid connection. OBD II connector locations vary by vehicle make. Please refer to service manual for your vehicle to find it's OBD II connector location.

2. Turn the ignition switch to on.

Turn the ignition on to power the interface. If this is the first attempt the BLUETOOTH DEVICE NEEDS TO BE PAIRED.

3. Pairing Bluetooth interface.

In the Apple upper menu bar click the bluetooth symbol. Scroll down to set up bluetooth device (You may nee to turn on Bluetooth first). Setup Bluetooth

Why isn't there a bluetooth symbol in my menu bar?

  • Under system preferences/bluetooth select "Show bluetooth status in the menu bar" in the lower left corner.

4. Bluetooth Setup Assistant.

The bluetooth setup assistant will search for devices automatically. If your device does not show up, make sure the ignition is on and that your device is properly connected. Verify interface power by a steady red LED on the case. Bluetooth Setup Assistant 1

5. Passcode Settings.

This is the procedure for the Bluetooth interface we sell. Other interface settings may vary. After initially attempting to pair, it should display the message "The pairing attempt was unsuccessful." This is because the passcode needs to be set. Click "Passcode Options..." in the lower left.

6. Selecting a Passcode.

Select "Use a specific passcode" and enter "1234" for the interface we ship. Other interfaces may require a different passcode. Click OK.

Your computer should now connect and setup a serial port for Movi to use.

7. Open Movi.

If this is your first attempt, we recommend clicking "No" when prompted to connect to your car, and to check the "Connection" preferences in Movi before attempting to connect to the interface. Refer to here for Bluetooth settings.

WiFi Interface TypeWi-Fi and Network Connection:

Here we will demonstrate how to connect to a Wi-Fi interface.

1. Open the Network Preferences window in your System Preferences.

In here you will edit your network settings to connect to the interface's Wi-Fi network.
Network Preferences

2. Open location editor.

Creating a new location is recommended. If you do not wish to do this, skip to step 6. Click on "Location", and select "Edit Locations...".

3. Create the new location.

Click the + symbol to add a new location, and enter a name for it. In this example, the location is called "Movi Wi-Fi". When finished, click "Done".

4. Edit the location settings.

Select the network you just created in the Location pull down menu, and click on the AirPort in the left column. You may lose your connection (if you were previously connected). Click the "Advanced" button in lower right corner of the window.

5. Add the device's network as a Preferred Network.

After opening the "Advanced" window, you can add the device's network as a Preferred Network. Click on the "AirPort" tab, and click + under the Preferred Networks. A window will pop up and you can either type in the network name, or click the "Show Networks" button and select the network. If you do not see a network displayed by your Wi-Fi interface, you should check that it is powered.

6. Edit your TCP/IP settings.

Click the TCP/IP tab and edit your settings.  Select "Manually" in the Configure IPv4 Address field. Here you will enter an IP address that is within range of your interface IP, but not the exact address.

  • Example: Interface IP address 192.168.0.10
  • Enter 192.168.0.11 or 192.168.0.12 or 192.168.0.09, etc.
  • Enter the Subnet Mask that is required by your interface.  Here we use 255.255.255.0 as an example.
  • Leave the router field blank and click OK.

Please note:  The values below are used as an example. Please reference your wifi interface documentation to determine the proper IP settings for your Wi-Fi device. If you experience connection issues, you may try another IP address within range of your interface IP address.

7. Finished with System Preferences.

When finished editing your system preferences, the Network window should look similar to the one below. If you created the new location, then you can easily switch back and forth between your internet Wi-Fi connection and the OBD interface connection simply by selecting the location and then the network each time you switch.

8. Open Movi® or Movi Pro®.

If this is your first time using the network interface with Movi®, you should click "No" when you're prompted "Try connecting now?" during the application startup. The default interface type is serial, so it will not find your network interface until you change the interface type in the preferences.

9. Edit the network settings in Movi® or Movi Pro®.

Open (Movi -> Preferences). Select "Network" for the Interface Type. In the Interface IP Address and Ports fields, enter the exact IP address and port speed of the Wi-Fi interface you are connecting. Please refer to the interface documentation to determine the proper IP address and port speed. Close the preferances window.

10. Use your Wi-Fi interface.

Click update, and you should see the IP and port of the interface along the bottom of Movi® or Movi Pro®. Movi Network Screenshot

USB InterfaceSerial Preferences: (USB and Bluetooth)

1. How do I know if my USB to serial driver is installed correctly?

  • Click here for help on installing serial drivers.

2. What should I select for Serial Port settings?

Bluetooth InterfaceOn Automatic the software will just cycle through all of the serial ports on your computer until either it finds one that is connected to an OBD II interface or it runs out of ports. Once connected to a port, Movi® will remember it and try that port first the next time it connects. If you select a specific port, it will only check that port for the interface. Since there is a timeout it can be faster to select the specific port.

3. What should the Port Speed (bps) be set at?

For the interfaces we currently ship, it should be set to 38400. Another common speed for OBD II interfaces is 9600.

4. What is Parity and what should Parity be set to?

Parity is a method for error detection in transmission. For most interfaces it should be set to "No Parity".

5. What is the "Timeout (sec)" selection in Movi®ʼs Preferences for?

The timeout is how long the software will wait before it gives up on hearing back from a serial port. Some cars always respond fast, in which case you would want to set the timeout short, so you don't waste time when you have connection issues. However, some cars respond more slowly, in which case you would want to set it longer to ensure that Movi® does not prematurely terminate communication.

6. What is the Connection Keep Alive checkbox for?

Some interfaces, such as the Kiwi Wi-Fi interface, may lose their connection if left idle. With this checkbox checked, the software will automatically send a message every few seconds to keep the connection alive.
