How is this done?

Any time a malfunction is detected by your vehicle, a "trouble code" is stored in the engine control module. Certain criteria have to be met to set this code. This trouble code gives technicians a place to start their diagnosis to properly fix your vehicle's problem. Now you can access these codes, retrieve the engine sensors' freeze frame data (data that was stored at the time the fault occurred), and clear this information, which turns the light off.

Movi® is a software product designed for Mac OS X that, in combination with OBD II interfaces that use the ELM327 chip, provides communication with a vehicle's engine diagnostic system. Movi® is solely intended to interpret the information which is stored in or relayed to the Onboard Diagnostics (OBD) system.
